Information & Responsibilities

CalArts Extended Studies is a self-supporting unit within California Institute of the Arts, providing educational opportunities for creative professionals and lifelong learners. CalArts Extended Studies non-degree credit courses reflect the artistic and academic integrity of the degree curriculum at CalArts. Funding is generated through fees collected from a diverse and changing student population. Part-time instructor positions are on a course-by-course contracted basis.  The contract is for the duration of the set development and delivery periods only and is subject to sufficient enrolment.

Appreciating and Collecting Contemporary Art in Los Angeles

Online course development:  4 weeks, September 23-October 18,  2024
Online course delivery:  6 weeks, Saturdays,  October 19-November 23, 10 am-1 pm
Classes are held off-campus at The Reef, 1933 S Broadway, Los Angeles.

Course Description

This course is your guide to the exciting contemporary art scene in Los Angeles. You will explore many aspects of contemporary art leading to a deeper understanding of current movements and how to embark on building a collection. Find the art that speaks to you and understand its place within the wide range of the art that is being produced today. The course begins with an overview of contemporary art to establish a general understanding of key artists, terminology, and trends.  Grounded in principles of equity, inclusivity, and decolonization, this course explores topics such as the history of colonial art collections, cultural extraction, and appropriation. Learn where and how to purchase pieces, and how to make informed and ethical choices as a collector. Through lectures, discussions, and field trips, students should gain an in-depth understanding of contemporary art and the ability to navigate the  LA art scene with confidence. This class takes place at The Reef, CalArt’s new space in downtown Los Angeles.  Possible class visits may include commercial galleries, private collections, artist’s studios, and non-profit art spaces.

Learning Goals

During this course of study you should:

  • gain an understanding of current movements in contemporary art

  • learn to navigate the commercial local art market

  • develop a strategy for discovering, appreciating,  and collecting contemporary art in Los Angeles

  • Learn how to develop a relationship between the artist and art collector as one based on respect, dialogue, and reciprocal exchange.

 

 

Requirements

Instructor Duties
• Develop online course materials and learning assessments.
• Utilize the Canvas System as the course support platform
• Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students
• Evaluate student achievement of specific learning outcomes, and assign grades (pass/fail)
• Post final student grades to the Extended Studies registration system by set deadlines
• Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner
• Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of practice
• Participate in required meetings,  orientation,  and complete mandatory training programs
• Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner including
• Employ culturally competent and inclusive teaching methodologies in the classroom 

Qualifications

  • an advanced degree or comparable professional training in contemporary art history
  • extensive knowledge of commercial art galleries and non-profit spaces in Los Angeles
  • experience working with artists, art collectors, and art dealers
  • experience developing  and delivering classes for adult learners
  • excellent interpersonal and presentation, written, and communication skills

Salary

The rate of pay is $85 per hour for 18 hours of course development and 18 hours of course delivery. Please note that the course delivery requires a minimum number of students to be enrolled in the course.
